Biddy Shadbolt Memorial Scholarship
Encouraging and enabling local students to pursue careers in health in memory of Biddy, a much loved community member and Akaroa Health Practice Nurse.
2025 Criteria
Awarded to one student each year leaving high school who;
-
Has a home address within the Akaroa Health Enrolment area (Banks Peninsula from Birdlings flat to Port Levy)
-
Enrolling in a health-related tertiary programme (e.g. nursing, medicine, physiotherapy, midwifery or allied health).

Studying at a recognised New Zealand tertiary institution (University, Ara Institute of Canterbury, or equivalent provider).
Scholarship Package
1. Financial Award - A one-off payment of NZD $5,000 to support study-related costs such as tuition, accommodation, equipment, or travel.
2. Work / Placement Support - Opportunity for holiday employment or clinical placement at Akaroa Health, aligned to the student’s field of study.
Roles may include:

Healthcare Assistant (HCA)
-
District nursing support
-
Practice administration or clinical support
All placements are subject to suitability, supervision capacity, and safety checks.
3. The student will be assigned a named Akaroa Health mentor (e.g. GP, RN, or allied health professional) who will provide;

At least two meetings per year (in person or online)
-
Career guidance, and professional support.
4. Pathway Commitment
Akaroa Health will offer:

Priority consideration for graduate placements (nurse or GP positions).

Guaranteed interview for eligible new graduates.
Selection Process
Applicants must complete the Akaroa Health Scholarship Application Form and submit it by 21 November 2025 to: generalmanager@akaroahealth.nz

Successful applicants will be advised by email by 29 November.
Payment made upon provision of proof of enrolment and acceptance to an eligible health programme, and verified bank account details.
